It’s only mid-June, but the boating season is in high gear at Newport Cove, a waterfront development on the Chain O’ Lakes. Residents are taking full advantage of the lakefront. “It’s an old-fashioned summer this year,” said one. “There’s been no flooding, little rain and the lakes came alive early.”

Throughout the summer, residents have scheduled private parties at Newport Cove’s waterfront gazebo, where they are able to grill, picnic or play games like corn hole or volleyball. And, of course, there are boat rides for their guests and good fishing off the piers at the community’s 100-plus-slip marina.

Most of the residents own golf carts which they pack up with food and beverages and take down to the lake.  “It’s great to be able to just walk out your door and be on your boat without worrying about trailers, hosing down piers or taking them in and out at the end of the year,” said a resident who has two boats moored at the Newport Cove marina. “We get all the fun of waterfront living, but not much of the work. After a day at the office, my wife and I often jump on the boat and tool over to one of the many waterfront restaurants in the area.”

The highlight of Newport Cove’s summer will be August 18, when a home being built in the development will be given to a wounded veteran injured in the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. The festivities, open to the public, will include a craft fair, refreshments, NFL players, boat rides, a truly amazing key ceremony and an evening fireworks show, courtesy of Steitz’s nearby restaurant, where those in the Newport Cove park will enjoy “front row” seating.
